Frank Marten

Francis Alfred Marten was the youngest son of Henry Marten and his wife Frances, born on 14 Mar 1862 at Penn Hall, Staffordshire. His mother died twelve days after his birth. He never married and died aged 29 on 1 May 1891 in Pakkoka in Northern Burma. This date of death is recorded in Sir Alfred George Marten’s family tree.

All of Frank’s three older brothers went to Cambridge but there is no record of Frank’s education or what took him out to Burma. Most likely this was a military career or possibly railway engineering – the probable cause of death would have been tropical disease.

This picture, the only likeness we have of him, comes from his sister Florence‘s album
