Clients of John R Woodley, Morgan & Co, 1931

The 1935 letter of agreement between William Henry Morgan and his new accountancy partner William Back survived the Blitz and is presented here on the page covering the firm Morgan Back and Co. The Company was based in the City of London in Gresham Street, EC2. Also surviving, is a detailed client list of the earlier company, John R Woodley, Morgan & Co. (J.R.W.M.) dating from 1931 and a further annotated version at least four or five years later. Continue reading →

John Richard Woodley

John Richard Woodley was born in 1866 in Lewisham, South East London. He is recorded as being a Bank Accountant in 1891 before qualifying and becoming an Incorporated Accountant by 1895. He was in business with Sidney Kent, twelve years his junior, but someone who must have passed the newly created examinations at an early age. A partnership between John Woodley and Sidney Herbert Kent is recorded as being dissolved in October 1900. Some time during or immediately after the first world war John Woodley came together with a new partner, William Henry Morgan. This eventually became the firm John R Woodley, Morgan and Co. by 1927. Osnaburgh House Hotel, Regents Park

Osnaburgh House was a regency town house and, latterly, small town hotel just off Regents Park in Camden, north of the Euston Road. It was destroyed or knocked down, during or immediately after the war around 1941-45. It was immediately adjacent to Cumberland Market. Continue reading →

Maurice Goldman

Maurice Goldman was born in Stamford Hill on 30 Jul 1908, eldest son to Benjamin Goldman and his wife Rachel Festenstein. In the 1880’s, Benjamin Goldman, as a young child had fled Russia with his parents as Jewish emigres. He went on to found a successful Timber Business in London called B Goldman and Sons.
