Lady Shakespeare’s Postcard

One postcard from Amy Shakespeare, wife of Sir Geoffrey Hithersay Shakespeare has survived in our archive.

The card is written to Molly Downing and is postmarked Buntingford Herts, 19 Jan 1948. Lady Shakespeare was the Godmother of Pamela Downing, Molly’s oldest daughter.  Indeed, a generation up, Lady Shakespeare’s mother Constance Loveridge was also the Godmother of Molly Downing herself.

The hastily written card reads as follows:-

I am very interested to hear from Pamela you have a son-in-law which daughter? Mother, who is here for the day, also sends her love and congrats. She keeps very well, I am glad to say and I see her quite often. Do come and see us in London – I shall be there till Easter Holidays, mid week, would love to see you at Sandon Herts love and best wishes A.S.

The reference to a new son-in-law refers to the marriage of Hazel Downing, Molly’s second oldest daughter, to Stephen Haynes on 20 Sep 1947.
