3 Paragon Buildings, Cheltenham

For nearly twenty years a number of the Marten family lived in Cheltenham, in a place they called ‘Lamberhurst’. It was in fact part of a Georgian Terrace in Bath Street called 3 Paragon buildings. Significantly, it was very close to Cheltenham College, the boys’ school.

After her divorce Nettie Marten moved in with her brother, Edward, some time around 1900. The brother and sister are seen living there in both the 1901 and 1911 censuses. The proximity to Cheltenham College meant that they acted as base and possibly boarding for their nephews, Roy and Henry Marten, the two Australian-born sons of their brother Tib. Earlier Nettie’s son Hal Lewis had also attended the same school.

Sources and Notes

  • The picture of Teddy (Edward Dimmack Marten) seated on a deckchair in the garden shows him already with a stick. The date is probably 3 Sep 1907. He is described as ‘paralysed’ after 1912.
  • The man standing behind may be a doctor but the text is indecipherable.
  • The young lady standing on the steps next to Nettie is probably Dolly Growse, the fiancee of Hal Lewis. In which case the photo will probably date from about 1914.
